Students with exceptionalities are very diverse compared to the general education population. As a result, it is recommended to have multiple strategies to help this group of students learn.
Exceptionalities for students can include sensory, physical, cognitive, emotional, or communication abilities. Some students may even have a combination of these.
Something else to note is the prevalence and incidence of exceptional learners. According to Hallahan, Kauffman, & Pullen, "Prevalence refers to the percentage of a population or number of individuals having a particular exceptionality" (p. 6, 2015). Incidence refers to how common a disability or exceptionality occurs. There can be high or low incidence categories.
