Role-Playing
Role-play is any speaking activity where you can put yourself into someone else’s shoes, or when you are yourself in an imaginary situation. One of the many positive reasons to use role-play is so the students can pretend to be someone else for a short period of time. They could become a teacher, doctor, older siblings, etc. You can also use role-playing to help the students express different views. You can split the class for those that express views for or against a certain theme. Another great reason to use role-playing is because it is a very engaging activity.
It also gives students who may be shy a chance to express themselves. Role-playing helps the classroom become broader since it includes the outside world. This offers a wide range for different language opportunities. Some ways to be successful by using a role playing strategy are to bring the situation to life by using props, keeping the roles for the students real and relevant, and help the students with the language they will be using during the role play and with any errors that may occur.

Social Studies- This could be used in Social Studies by having the students role play different presidents, explorers, Native American tribes, etc. They could also role play different periods of time.
Writing- The students could work by themselves or in small groups to write their own role-play story. This helps the students be creative and also gives them the choice of what they want to act out. This is a great way to get students excited about writing since they know other people will be an audience for them.
Reading- This could be integrated into reading because the teacher could provide different prompts and assign them to different students. The children would have to read and depending on grade level, memorize their lines. They will then role-play their character in front of the class.
